Home Office Furniture Shopping Tips

I recently accepted a new job that involved working from home which was great in principal but then I realised I had no office space. I therefore had to get myself organised and set up a home office so I could work effectively from home. This was as simple as expected due to the sheer amount of choice available for office furniture nowadays. Here are my top tips to share for setting up a home office.

There are three key things you need for a home office. A desk, an office chair and office storage and below I detail recommendations of what to look out for when shopping for these particular items.

But before we look at individual items for the office, we should look at the office space. The location for your office needs to take into consideration your personal needs and requirements. For example, some people need peace and quiet whilst others prefer an office away from the main living areas if the house. Parent may prefer an office close where they can supervise children while working at their desk. Other people may prefer a completely separate office to the house with its own entrance if they are a business owner who may have business meetings at the home.

A home office can reflect your style and character whilst serving its functions well. Depending on your budget you can create a home office that is inviting, professional and reduces stress.

Office Desk
I found choosing an office desk a surprisingly difficult task. A desk is the biggest piece of office furniture item you are going to buy so it needs to be carefully planned. There are so many styles, colours, designs and prices to choose from. By making a short-list of what I wanted from my desk, I was able to search far more effectively for the right desk.

Desk space is an important factor to consider. For example, my desk needed to be able to house a computer, keyboard, telephone and I wanted draws for storage. Another person may require a simply desk for their laptop and will obviously require something smaller.

The dynamics of your home interiors are something to also consider. Is your home contemporary, classic, strong or soft? The will influence your choice in desk design for example a glass desk with leather chair may suit a contemporary apartment but not a cottage.

The location of where you are going to house your office desk is also important as it will affect the size and design of the desk you chose to buy. There are corner desks available if you want to utilize your space. I highly recommend you plan out your home office and take careful measurements as it will save you a lot of time further down the line as there is nothing worse than buying office furniture that doesn't fit in your office!

Office Chair
This is another office item that I thought would be quick and easy to buy but then I got reading and there are so many types of office chairs available including swivel, executive and ergonomic office chairs. There are also low back, mid back and high back office chairs.

The most important factor when choosing your chair is the chair height. Also consider any keyboard trays that are on your desk since they will snag the armrests of your chair.

Swivel office chairs usually have the option of low, mid or high back and are ideal for those who need freedom to move around the desk a lot such as answering the phone. The duration of time that you will spend on a chair is an important factor as those who spend long periods of time in their office chair require the correct lumbar support. You also want to make sure the chair you buy is comfortable but also fits your desk.

Office Storage
Finally, you need office storage to house all those letters and folders you have. Again, planning is key here to finding the best office storage to meet your requirements. Measure out where your desk will go and then work around this. Whether you are looking for a single filing unit or multiple storage solutions, you will find a wide choice of versatile and customizable filing and storage online.
